I’m very excited to welcome Dr. Elisabeth Morray onto the podcast today! 

Dr. Elisabeth Morray is a licensed psychologist who has done AMAZING work in her career as a therapist. She’s spent time in leadership and facilitating continuing education training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to thousands of licensed clinicians. Elisabeth is currently the VP of Clinical at Alma, a platform that supports the practices of over 24,000 behavioral health clinicians.

When it comes to seeing success as a therapist in private practice, it’s VITAL that you have strong clinical skills. You want to be able to attract your ideal client, serve them really well, AND retain them. 

Two of the major components that factor into this are clinical supervision and professional development. I knew Elisabeth was the perfect guest to bring on to chat about these topics!

In today’s episode, Elisabeth and I discuss why being a GREAT therapist is the best marketing. 

If you want to see long-term success in your private practice, clinical supervision can be extremely helpful in doing so. As therapists, we’re accustomed to encouraging our clients to grow and evolve in their lives. So…why shouldn’t we be willing to do the same?!

As clinicians, having a space that is solely devoted to learning and expanding is super valuable. When choosing a clinical supervisor, it’s important to find someone you align with + works with a similar niche. This is someone who will continue shaping your professional identity as a therapist. 

It’s okay to be picky. You should be well-matched AND inspired by what this person is doing in their career!

Along with clinical supervision, peer supervision groups can be very impactful. Gaining an outside perspective + accountability from others to show you what’s possible is HUGE! 

Sure, you can have the best marketing out there. But…if you don’t have solid clinical skills to go along with that, you’re going to experience a LOT of client turnover. 

You’ve got to be willing to invest in yourself if you want to have a thriving private practice. Exploring continuing education and professional development will allow you to build a tool kit that will serve you AND your clients well today, and for the future!

While your certifications and qualifications are significant (and something to be very proud of), they’re not the most important things to your clients. At the end of the day, your clients want someone who truly cares about them. 

They want to feel seen and heard. They want to feel like you’re ‘meshing’ well, and that you can help them make progress on their therapy journey. ALL of that matters more than a ton of letters behind your name!

I know it can be difficult to balance pieces like clinical supervision and professional development - especially with a busy private practice. But…choosing to embrace your current skills + pursue NEW skills and growth for years to come is sooo worthwhile.
