Charging a high rate as a therapist is HARD.
We experience sooo much internal guilt when we choose to do this. It’s our job to work on our money mindset, process through these emotions, and own them.
But…what happens when OTHER therapists question your rates?
They put you down for charging a premium rate, and place their limiting beliefs onto you. That shit is even HARDER!
This is something that has come up on many coaching calls within my PPA VIP community, so I knew I needed to dive into it more here.
In today’s episode, I’m talking about what to say when other therapists question your rates.
I believe this holds back so many therapists from success, and it shouldn’t be that way! I’ve experienced this quite a bit in my own career, and it’s tough. Whether it’s judgy, negative comments coming from Instagram, or from people I know in real life, it still stings.
As therapists, we WANT to help people. That’s why we chose this profession after all! Just because we’re not ‘in it for the money’, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be making good money, ya know?
Last time I checked, ‘helping’ people doesn’t pay the bills. It doesn’t buy a home, or pay for groceries, or family vacations. We need actual MONEY to do these things!
More often than not, we need to work on our money mindset. We tend to have a deep-seated belief that wanting to make more money equates us to being unethical or greedy.
When someone calls you out like that (i.e. another woman in a helping profession), it is super hurtful. It makes you question what you’re doing, and leaves you thinking that maybe you shouldn’t be charging a premium rate.
Fortunately, there are plenty of things you can do to improve your money mindset.
Acknowledging the fact that this is a very difficult and nuanced issue is the first step. While not everyone will be able to work with you, there are PLENTY of people making great money who can!
And also..you bring a unique value that will be appreciated by the right kind of clients. They'll have NO problem paying your rate!
I want you to protect your time and energy, because burnout in this field is REAL. No one is going to benefit from you if you’re not prioritizing your own health and well-being. Your caseload should be sustainable, and this work should be something you’re excited to do long-term!
While I definitely want you charging a premium rate (and be excited about doing so), there’s no need to shout it from the rooftops either. You probably won’t be talking about money publicly that often!
But…when it does come up and is being questioned, my best advice is to respond with grace and professionalism. You’ll develop a ‘thicker skin’ over time, and learn to ignore the negativity.
Surround yourself with others who are going to support + uplift you. I promise - there are a LOT of us out here. We’re more than happy to hype you up and celebrate your wins along the way!
At the end of the day, you’re allowed to charge whatever the heck YOU want to charge. It doesn’t make you unethical, greedy, or selfish. There is so much GOOD that you can do when you’re making more money!
I'm so, SO proud of you for doing this work, fighting burnout, and really trying to be the best therapist that you can be. I’m rooting for you, and I know you can do this!!
