Something that comes up a LOT is whether or not therapists should share political content online.
I received this question quite a bit last fall (especially during election season). Honestly, there’s no ‘one-size-fits-all’ answer.
But…I know it can really feel like a constant ‘push-pull’ for therapists!
You want to speak up and share your opinions, but you’re also unsure of how it will land with your audience.
The truth? This topic is SUPER nuanced. I knew it was time to dig into it more here!
In today’s episode, I’m diving into the topic of ‘should therapists share political content on Instagram’, and how to do so.
First of all, your Instagram page is YOUR space. You’re allowed to have and share your opinions there, because it’s social media (not a session with a client).
Just be prepared for pushback if you speak out - especially about hot-button political issues! People looove to share their opinions on the internet, and they can get pretty heated about politics.
If political expression matters to you, say it! Whether you choose to share loudly or subtly, that part is for you to decide.
Sharing political content can actually strengthen trust and rapport when done with care. It lets your people know what YOU stand for. It attracts aligned clients, referral partners, and even fellow professionals.
And if you don’t feel strongly, or your caseload is politically diverse, you don’t *have* to share. That’s totally okay!
We’re not trying to be performative here, or please everybody. Authenticity and transparency is KEY, and will go sooo much farther!
I’ve personally shared eight political posts in the last six months (all linked below if you want to check them out). They’re not (all) super spicy, but REAL.
My clients know where I stand, and that connection matters.
I’m not trying to report the news or cover every.freaking.thing that happens (that would be exhausting)! I AM choosing to show up as ME, and I have no problem expressing my personal opinions online.
If you're still unsure about sharing political content on Instagram, start small. You can even share my posts to get your feet wet!
Either way, I hope you choose to let your people see you, and get to know the amazing human that YOU are. This is about building community and inviting people into a space where shared values are welcomed!!
