Networking is one of the most underrated, and honestly one of the coolest, parts of building a private practice.
When you consistently show up on Instagram as your authentic self, you naturally create opportunities to connect with therapists and other professionals who share your values.
And no, networking doesn’t have to feel awkward, salesy, or transactional. The goal is simply to build genuine relationships with people who care about serving clients well.
As your audience grows, you’ll regularly hear from people who aren’t in your specialty, don’t live in a state where you’re licensed, or need services you don’t provide. That’s where a strong referral network becomes incredibly valuable.
When you know and trust other therapists and helping professionals, you can confidently refer clients to someone who truly fits their needs. In return, those professionals often become a source of referrals for your own practice.
In today’s episode, I’m sharing practical strategies for building strong referral relationships and networking with private pay therapists.
It all starts with intention. Instead of following thousands of random accounts, look for therapists and helping professionals whose work genuinely resonates with you.
Use Instagram to search by specialty, location, or population served. Pay attention to their values, personality, and the way they show up online.
Then focus on becoming a real connection before ever mentioning referrals. Reply to stories, leave thoughtful comments, celebrate their wins, and engage consistently over time.
Strong referral relationships are built through trust, not cold direct messages.
As those relationships grow, continue supporting each other even when you don’t need anything in return. Share their work, check in periodically, and collaborate when opportunities naturally arise.
When you do send referrals, make them as thoughtful as possible. Confirm availability, provide warm introductions when appropriate, and make the process easy for both the client and the receiving therapist.
Building a trusted professional community is one of the most valuable long-term investments you can make in your private practice.
